Botox Q&A

How does Botox work?

Botox is created from a natural substance found in lakes, forests, and soil. This substance is called Clostridium botulinum and is dangerous in certain concentrations, but the volume used in medical aesthetics is carefully controlled and perfectly safe.

Botox works by temporarily preventing treated muscle tissue from going through its full range of motion. The medication is delivered via a series of injections. After treatment, your muscles will still allow you to make normal facial expressions, but they won’t be strong enough to tug and pull your skin into folds, lines, or wrinkles.

You should always work with a trained medical professional when having Botox treatment. It takes knowledge and skill to understand the anatomy of facial structures and where to place the injections for the best results.

What areas of the face respond well to Botox injections?

Botox is FDA-approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, which are the starburst-shaped lines that extend out from the corners of your eyes when you smile or laugh. Botox is also used to treat frown lines between your eyebrows and horizontal forehead lines.

Practitioners often use Botox to smooth lines and wrinkles in other areas of the face. During your consultation, your practitioner will explain what you can hope to achieve through Botox treatments.

How long can I expect my Botox results to last?

Getting Botox injections only takes a few moments, and you can resume your normal activities immediately afterward. You’ll see the full results within a couple of days.

You can expect your results to last around four months. At that point, you’ll begin to notice the lines and wrinkles slowly returning. You can then decide if you’d like to come back in for another round of injections.

The temporary nature of Botox is one of the reasons these treatments are so popular. You can try the treatment to see if you like the results, and your practitioner can make minor adjustments during the next round of injections if needed.
